Utility services

The house plan on the notice board shows meter locations. We take meter readings before you move in, but you must also report these to your supplier.

Your move-in date is the date stated on your contract. Meter readings are taken on this date and shown on the inventory. If you move in later, you still need to give the contract start date to utility companies.

The mains water may need to be turned on at the stop cock. Its location is shown on your house plan and it can usually be found under the kitchen sink or outside under the pavement next to the water meter.

Heating and hot water #

Check your boiler is switched on for hot water.

Economy 7 water heaters can take 24 hours to heat up, so ensure they are switched on immediately.

Run hot and cold water taps for at least two minutes to flush the system when moving in.

Broadband #

We advise you arrange for broadband installation as early as possible since it can take several weeks. Please contact us if your provider requires the owner to sign a way-leave agreement.

To avoid additional charges, you may need to return your router and other broadband equipment at the end of your occupancy.

Television #

If you have one or more televisions, you must apply for license at tvlicensing.co.uk.

Council tax #

Full time students can request a council tax exemption letter from the University.

Parking permits #

Most residential roads in Exeter require parking permits and there is usually a limit of two cars per property. Apply for a parking permit online.

Shared billing services #

We do not endorse any shared billing company and recommend you seek further advice before entering into an agreement.
